The Lab · Case study · TagForge
One small idea. A whole map of opportunities.
TagForge started as a simple Android app to read and write NFC stickers, the kind that cost less than a teh tarik. Then we asked AI to help map every place a sticker like that could be useful. One small idea opened up opportunities in homes, kitchens, shops, factories, farms and clinics.

The small idea
A sticker, a phone, a tap.
NFC (near-field communication) is the same technology as tap-to-pay. A sticker holds a little information and needs no battery: the phone powers it for the moment you tap. TagForge does three things with it.
-
Read
Hold any tag near the phone and see what is on it, what type it is and how much space is left.
-
Write
Put a link, text, Wi-Fi login, contact card or location on a sticker. Stack several records on one tag.
-
Run
Turn a tap into a routine: silent mode, Bluetooth on, open Waze, start a timer. One tap, many actions.
TagForge is heading to Google Play with a free version for the basics and a Pro version with everything. See the app →
The opportunity map
Tap a sector. Watch one idea branch out.
The centre is TagForge. Each glowing hub is an industry; each small neuron is a real use. Tap a hub to zoom in, tap a neuron to read it. The filters show what works today and what AI unlocks.
Why AI multiplies it
A tag knows where. AI knows what it means.
The tag
Which thing, which place. “This is chiller 2, back kitchen.”
The tap
Who, when, and what they saw. “Checked by Aina at 2.10 pm: 6 °C.”
AI on many taps
Patterns, warnings and proof. “Chiller 2 warms up every Friday night. Service it before the weekend.”
A single tap is a convenience. Thousands of taps, read by AI, become a business: maintenance, freshness, attendance, authenticity and care.
How we pulled it
This case study, the Tarik Thinking way
- BrewHuman
A real itch: NFC apps are powerful but confusing. Make one that anyone can use, with a free and a Pro version.
- PourAI
AI poured uses across every industry it could think of, then searched for research on NFC and AI. 67 uses survived.
- Pull backHuman
Sorted honestly: what works today, what needs an online service, what needs sensor tags. Every paper was opened and checked.
- FrothTogether
The app screens became a clickable demo, and the uses became this map.
- ServeYou
Try the demo, vote for the uses you want, or build your own NFC idea below.
Published evidence
Plain NTAG213, 215 and 216 tags, used for real
These are the cheap, battery-free stickers TagForge writes. Most published studies only say “NFC Forum Type 2 tag”, so we split the list: sources that name the NTAG21x chip, and real-world studies using the same kind of tag.
Names NTAG213, 215 or 216
-
Embedding NFC Tags into 3DCP Elements
Hernández Vargas & Dervishaj · RILEM Concrete and Digital Fabrication (suppl. proceedings)
NTAG213 tags (25 mm and 8 mm) were placed between layers of robot-printed concrete. They could not be read while the concrete was wet, but worked again after a day of drying, through up to one 10 mm layer.
For TagForge: Tags can be printed into parts and building elements. Our 3D-printing pipeline can use the same trick.
-
Evaluation of near-field communication technology for labeling dental ceramic crowns: an in-vitro pilot study
Joseph, Deeban, Aldhuwayhi et al. · Digital Health
Tested NTAG213 tags as surface labels on ceramic crowns to identify the prosthesis and the patient, as an in-vitro pilot.
For TagForge: The smallest NTAG213 inlays fit where printed labels cannot: medical devices, jewellery, small parts.
-
Data Immunity in Near Field Radio Frequency Communication Systems: NFC as an Aspect of Electromagnetic Information Security
Firlej, Musial & Kubiak · Applied Sciences 14(13)
Studied NFC access control built on the common NTAG21x tag family (the paper maps NTAG213 memory). Tags were practically unreadable beyond 15 cm, but a resonant circuit or RF amplifier stretched reception to 25 to 30 cm, and readers leaked data-carrying harmonics.
For TagForge: For anything sensitive, lock tags with a password and check the factory signature. Never store secrets in plain text.
-
OpenTag3D: open NFC standard for 3D-printing filament
OpenTag3D project · Specification v2.003
An open, offline-first standard that stores material, colour, batch, temperatures and weights on an NTAG215 or NTAG216 tag fixed to each filament spool.
For TagForge: A real industry format TagForge could read and write directly, and a model for material passports elsewhere.
-
Nintendo amiibo figures use the NTAG215 chip
pyamiibo documentation · Technical documentation
Amiibo figures and cards, sold worldwide, store their character data on NXP NTAG215 tags.
For TagForge: Proof that plain NTAG21x tags work at mass-market scale in physical products.
-
NTAG 213 TagTamper fact sheet
NXP Semiconductors · Product fact sheet
An NTAG213 with a tamper loop: it records a once-opened status, a tap counter and a factory signature, readable by any NFC phone without an app. NXP lists wine and spirits, cosmetics, pharma and security seals.
For TagForge: TagForge can read the seal status; brands add a small back end to spot counterfeits.
-
NTAG 213/215/216 product information
NXP Semiconductors · Product page and data sheet
144, 504 and 888 bytes of memory; read up to about 10 cm; 10-year data retention; 100,000 writes; 32-bit password, tap counter and factory originality signature.
For TagForge: The spec sheet behind every sticker TagForge writes.
Same kind of tag, real settings

Efficiency and Usability of a Near Field Communication-Enabled Tablet for Medication Administration
Landman, Neri, Robertson et al. · JMIR mHealth and uHealth 2(2)
20 nurses ran medication scenarios with barcode scanning and with NFC tags. NFC took 202 s against 182 s (not a significant difference) and 19 of 20 nurses rated it easy to use.
For TagForge: Tap-to-verify can replace barcode scanning in busy work without slowing people down.
-
NFC Internal: An Indoor Navigation System
Ozdenizci, Coskun & Ok · Sensors 15(4)
Tags at a real shopping mall’s entrance and shop doors guided visitors. The trial cost about US$50 in tags, found locations in under 0.5 s, and still worked when tags were damaged.
For TagForge: Wayfinding for malls, hospitals and factories is cheap with stickers and a phone.
-
NFC-Based Traceability in the Food Chain
Pigini & Conti · Sustainability 9(10)
A pork traceability prototype for Italy’s Marche regional quality mark: five phone apps (slaughter, cutting, processing, packing, shopper) wrote to NTAG tags and a shared database.
For TagForge: The same pattern fits halal and central-kitchen traceability: one tap per step.
-
Intelligent Materials for Labeling Dentures in Forensic Dental Identification: A Pilot Study
Ştefănescu, Neculai-Cândea, Popa et al. · Applied Sciences 13(9)
Tags sealed inside acrylic dentures were kept in sea water, fresh water, 40% alcohol and dilute acid for four years. The stored data came back unchanged.
For TagForge: Sealed tags last for years in harsh places: kitchens, outdoor sites, wet areas.
-
NFC Tag Awareness and Its Visual Implementation on Food Packaging: Case Study in Slovenia
Žurbi & Gregor-Svetec · Applied Sciences 14(21)
Surveys and eye-tracking on milk packs: most shoppers did not recognise NFC tags, apart from younger generations. A tag placed centre-right, with a clear tap invitation and contrasting colour, was noticed most.
For TagForge: Every TagForge sticker needs a visible “tap here” mark, or people will walk past it.
Enhanced NFC
When the tag can also measure
A sensor tag adds a sensor, and sometimes a tiny battery, next to the NFC chip. Pick a type to see how the energy and data move.
Availability and feasibility
| Type | Power | What it does | Can you get it? | Feasibility | With TagForge |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain tagNTAG213 / 215 / 216 stickers, cards, key fobs | None. The phone powers it during the tap. | Stores a link, text, Wi-Fi login or ID; counts taps; locks with a password. | Off the shelf everywhere, cents to a few ringgit each. | Ready now | Read and write with TagForge today. |
| Secure and tamper tagNTAG 213 TagTamper, signed tags | None. | Adds a seal loop that records “once opened”, plus a factory signature. | Specialist suppliers, higher unit cost, minimum orders. | Ready now | TagForge can read the status; authenticity checks need a small back end. |
| Dynamic tag in a deviceST25DV, NTAG213F / 216F | From the device, plus the phone’s field. | Lets a phone talk to a microcontroller and its sensors through a tap; can wake the device. | Chips and development kits widely sold; needs electronics design. | Buildable | Prototype with a dev kit; TagForge reads what the device writes. |
| Sensor logger labelNHS3100-based loggers: Avery Dennison, Caen RFID, Identiv, Microsensys | Small or printed battery for logging between taps. | Logs temperature, humidity or shock for months or years; a tap downloads the history. | Commercial products on sale for cold chain and pharma. | Buy, then integrate | Use the vendor app first; TagForge support needs each vendor’s data format. |
| Battery-free sensor tagGas, pressure, colour and sweat sensors in research | Only the phone’s field, during the tap. | Takes one measurement at the moment of the tap. | Mostly lab prototypes. | Research stage | Watch list. Not ready to build on. |
Prices are approximate and change with volume. Feasibility is our own judgement for a small team in Malaysia.
